Keppel DHCS is the first and largest district cooling systems (DCS) developer and operator in Singapore, providing DCS services at major business and industrial parks.

Incorporated in 1998, the company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Infrastructure, a division of Keppel Corporation focused on power, gas and environmental engineering.

The company has four DCS plants in Singapore with a combined plant capacity exceeding 64,000 refrigeration tonnes (RT), and a district heating and cooling plant in the Eco-Business Park of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City in China.

Keppel DHCS harnesses green technology to provide energy efficient cooling services, thereby preserving natural resources. The company got in touch with IPI to explore the latest innovative eco-friendly technologies in the market.

After understanding Keppel DHCS’ requirements, IPI contacted WiseWater Pte Ltd, a local start-up company funded by Small World Group (SWG) Incubator and Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF). The company specialises in providing advanced water purification products and solutions and was one of the awardees of the PUB-SPRING joint grant call in 2013 for its novel water purification solution for separating metals from industrial wastewater.

“Keppel DHCS is committed to providing energy-efficient and eco-friendly cooling solutions to our customers. Accordingly, we are proactive in seeking out innovative technology that allows us to reduce our operational cost and environmental impact. The efficiency of our cooling towers was an area which we had identified that can reap benefits from new technology. With new technology, we will be able to reduce water and energy consumption,” said Dr Khin Zaw, R&D Manager, Keppel DHCS.

Besides connecting WiseWater to Keppel DHCS, IPI also introduced the SPRING PACT initiative to both parties. The initiative provides funding support for the co-development of the water treatment solution for cooling tower systems.

In January 2015, Keppel DHCS inked an agreement with WiseWater to develop a cooling tower water treatment system which will be test-bedded at the Keppel DHCS plant in Changi Business Park.

“We are happy to partner with WiseWater to try out its advanced water purification technology which is expected to improve our plant’s water efficiency by up to 75 percent,” commented Dr Khin Zaw.

Mr Roger Rosche, CEO & Founder, WiseWater, said, “The partnership with Keppel DHCS is a milestone in our track record as a water treatment solutions provider. This market segment is estimated to help WiseWater achieve $5 million in sales revenue over the next three years.

“IPI has been very instrumental and helpful to WiseWater in many ways. They have introduced potentially interested parties to our technology both from an investment perspective and as a strategic partner. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with them!"
