Singapore-based engineering company, Cyclect, works with Australia-based Ecocentric Energy to enable effective monitoring and management of electrical systems.

Picture this: a sudden electrical fault shuts down your building, disrupting work and causing costly downtime. Or worse, an unnoticed issue sparks a fire, endangering lives and property. These scenarios are more common than you think, with the Singapore Civil Defense Force noting that electrical faults were among the top 2 causes of residential building fires in 2023.

Now imagine if such risks could be detected and prevented in real-time, saving time, money, and potentially lives.

Tackling these challenges is a priority for Singapore-based engineering solutions provider, Cyclect. To further improve their processes, Cyclect approached IPI.

"We wanted to enhance energy monitoring, optimise asset management, and reduce downtime through predictive maintenance," said Tan Ee Wei, Executive Director of Cyclect. "This was critical for helping our clients improve safety and maintenance, and lower operational costs while improving sustainability."

With IPI’s support, Cyclect partnered with Australia-based Ecocentric Energy to explore a solution that redefines how electrical systems are monitored—making them safer, more efficient, and future-ready.

Through their office in the UK and as part of a UK trade delegation in 2023, Ecocentric showcased its Numen AI system, a technology designed to deliver actionable insights into electrical assets without relying on costly, intrusive sensors.

“Following an internal assessment of their technology, IPI identified Cyclect as a best-fit partner with the technical capability and business resources to adopt and commercialise the solution in Southeast Asia," explained Steven Lee, Acting Cluster Head, Innovation & Technology at IPI.

Lee highlighted how Ecocentric’s robust technical and R&D expertise complemented this collaboration, which included technical knowledge sharing and the flexibility of the technical teams to collaboratively customise the solution for diverse use cases.

Ecocentric also recognised their compatibility with Cyclect. Their sales director, Ben Harrington noted: “Cyclect is a natural fit for Numen AI. They work in multiple sectors across the Southeast Asian region providing a range of engineering solutions and services.”

Unlike conventional methods that rely on multiple sensors, Numen AI uses advanced analytics to track high-resolution electrical data, providing real-time insights into asset performance.

"Numen AI’s technology combines sensor data, historical maintenance records, and advanced AI capabilities to detect faults quickly and accurately. This empowers users to prevent failures, reduce costs and enhance decision-making with AI-driven insights," said Tan.

On top of that, Tan emphasised that the technology “allows for expert-level advice to be delivered in natural language, eliminating the need for onsite specialists.”

“This innovation empowers users to make informed decisions based on AI-generated insights, further enhancing the efficiency of electrical infrastructure management,” he added.

Additionally, Numen AI supports businesses in tracking greenhouse gas emissions, helping companies comply with stringent environmental regulations.

However, implementing cutting-edge solutions like Numen AI is rarely without challenges. Cyclect encountered several hurdles during the collaboration, particularly in integrating the new technology with legacy electrical systems at their clients’ facilities. Given that AI is still in its early stages, certain scenarios required an initial training period to ensure smooth implementation and optimal performance.

Customising the solution to meet the diverse needs of industries—from data centres to chemical plants—was made more efficient through the expertise of Ecocentric’s dedicated data science team, who are continually exploring the latest AI technologies and methodologies. Numen AI, as a future-ready platform, provides the necessary data, processing capabilities, and knowledge to address both current and future challenges. As they continue to work together, the partnership has already begun delivering results. The new solutions developed are expected to save clients significant costs by reducing downtime and optimising energy usage.

Cyclect forecasts a significant increase in sales over the next three years and plans to expand their workforce to support product development and commercialisation—potentially creating new job opportunities. Beyond financial returns, the collaboration helps reduce carbon emissions, contributing to Singapore's Green Plan 2030 goals.

Looking ahead, through IPI’s connection and facilitation, Cyclect and Ecocentric are exploring ways to expand their partnership, delivering greater value to clients and advancing the push for sustainable technologies.

The challenges description

Electrical faults remain a major cause of operational disruptions and building fires. According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force, electrical faults were among the top two causes of residential building fires in 2023.

For companies managing complex facilities, undetected electrical issues can result in costly downtime, safety hazards, and even catastrophic incidents such as fires. Traditional methods for monitoring electrical systems often rely on multiple intrusive sensors and manual inspections, which can be expensive, time-consuming, and limited in their ability to provide real-time, actionable insights. As buildings and infrastructure age, the risk of faults increases, making it critical for engineering service providers to adopt more advanced and proactive approaches to asset management.

Cyclect recognised the need to enhance energy monitoring, optimise asset management and reduce downtime through predictive maintenance. Their goal was to help clients improve safety, streamline maintenance, lower operational costs, and support sustainability objectives. However, integrating advanced technologies into legacy electrical systems and meeting the diverse needs of clients across industries from data centres to chemical plants posed significant implementation challenges. The adoption of AI-based technologies also required overcoming initial implementation hurdles, including training periods for optimal performance.
